Snood knitting patterns

I recently made some mini snoods that fit nicely around your neck and fit well under a jumper or coat and since they are so popular at the moment I thought I'd write a tutorial for beginners on snood knitting.

The basics
For my snood I actually ended up using chunky wool which was meant to be knitted using 6mm needles, however I used 9mm needles to get them to knit up a bit faster. I checked first that my snood wouldn't be too 'gappy' and it seemed that that wasn't the case. For all of these snoods I used one skein/ball of Stylecraft Life Chunky.

I personally prefer circular needles over any other method of knitting in the round and for these snoods I used 9mm needles with an 80cm cable on them, I found mine at HobbyCraft for a couple of pounds. If you are unfamiliar with knitting in the round, don't worry it's not as scary as it sounds and I have a tutorial to guide you through it!

Snood 1

Snood 1 is a basic ribbed snood. You'll noticed that a lot of snoods on the high street are ribbed and so for my first snood design I went for the most popular option! Here's a rundown of how it's done:
  • Cast on 64 stitches onto your circular needles and spread around the needles. For some of my snoods I found that the stitches didn't always spread all the way round so I started in magic loop and once the work had 'grown' a bit I was able to change to knitting in the round normally.
  • Join your work on the first stitch (which is a knit stitch) as part of the following pattern: K4, P4, K4, P4, K4, P4, K4, P4, K4, P4, K4, P4, K4, P4, K4, P4
  • Repeat this row until you have 24 rows (which I personally think is the best length for a snood but you can make it longer if you wish) and start casting off.
  • To cast off in the round I recommend casting off until you have one stitch left on the needle and then slip the first two stitches that you cast off onto your needle then pull your wool/yarn through all three of these stitches to create a nice join. Cut your yarn and weave in the ends and you're done!
Snood 2

Snood 2 is a combination of ribbing and cabling and starts in a similar way to Snood 1.
  • Cast on 64 stitches onto your circular needles and spread around the needles.
  • Join your work on the first stitch (which is a knit stitch) as part of the following pattern: K4, P4, K4, P4, K4, P4, K4, P4, K4, P4, K4, P4, K4, P4, K4, P4
  • Repeat the first row for a further 4 rows until you have 5 rows.
  • On your 6th row, you will start cabling. Where it says 'C4' you need to take the first 2 stitches of the 4 you are cabling and hold them in front of your work on a cable needle (or a small DPN of the right size) you will then knit the 2 stitches which are left on your main needle. You then slip the stitches on your cable needle back onto your main needle and knit those 2. You then continue with the pattern by purling the next 4. So for the 6th row the pattern is as follows: K4, P4, C4, P4, K4, P4, C4, P4, K4, P4, C4, P4, K4, P4, C4, P4.
  • You then repeat the pattern you used for the first 1-5 rows for rows 7-11 and then use the pattern you used for row 6 for row 12, and repeat this twice more.
To clarify:
Rows 1-5: K4, P4, K4, P4, K4, P4, K4, P4, K4, P4, K4, P4, K4, P4, K4, P4
Row 6: K4, P4, C4, P4, K4, P4, C4, P4, K4, P4, C4, P4, K4, P4, C4, P4
Rows 7-11: K4, P4, K4, P4, K4, P4, K4, P4, K4, P4, K4, P4, K4, P4, K4, P4
Row 12: K4, P4, C4, P4, K4, P4, C4, P4, K4, P4, C4, P4, K4, P4, C4, P4
Rows 13-17: K4, P4, K4, P4, K4, P4, K4, P4, K4, P4, K4, P4, K4, P4, K4, P4
Row 18: K4, P4, C4, P4, K4, P4, C4, P4, K4, P4, C4, P4, K4, P4, C4, P4
Row 19-23: K4, P4, K4, P4, K4, P4, K4, P4, K4, P4, K4, P4, K4, P4, K4, P4
Row 24: K4, P4, C4, P4, K4, P4, C4, P4, K4, P4, C4, P4, K4, P4, C4, P4
Then cast off!

Snood 3

Snood 3 is total cabling! Very similar to Snood 2 except on your turning row you are cabling every set of knit stitches and the cables are a bit longer. The pattern is as follows:

Cast on 64 stitches onto your circular needles and spread around the needles.

Rows 1-7: K4, P4, K4, P4, K4, P4, K4, P4, K4, P4, K4, P4, K4, P4, K4, P4
Row 8: C4, P4, C4, P4, C4, P4, C4, P4, C4, P4, C4, P4, C4, P4, C4, P4
Rows 9-15: K4, P4, K4, P4, K4, P4, K4, P4, K4, P4, K4, P4, K4, P4, K4, P4
Row 16: C4, P4, C4, P4, C4, P4, C4, P4, C4, P4, C4, P4, C4, P4, C4, P4
Rows 17-23: K4, P4, K4, P4, K4, P4, K4, P4, K4, P4, K4, P4, K4, P4, K4, P4
Row 24: C4, P4, C4, P4, C4, P4, C4, P4, C4, P4, C4, P4, C4, P4, C4, P4
Then cast off!

Follow the instructions for Snood 2 if you need assistance on what to do for 'C4'.
